Giant macro - spicule as observed by CDS on
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine spectral time series of coronal line Mg ix 368 A and transition region line O v 629 A, observed with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) onboard the SOHO spacecraft. Primarily we were looking for intensity and velocity oscillations in polar plumes, however by chance we detected a giant macro-spicule at the limb and were able to follow its dynamical structure. Blue and red-shifted emission in the O v line indicates that it is probably a rotating twisted magnetic jet. Emission is also detected in the Mg ix 368 A line, at a temperature of 1 million K. Both Fourier and wavelet transforms have been applied independently to the analysis of the oscillations in order to nd the most reliable periods. We report here on the existence of long period oscillations in the polar plumes as observed in the O v 629 A line. Our observations indicate the presence of compressional waves with periods of 20-25 minutes.

متن کاملImproving seismic image in complex structures by new solving strategies in the CO-CRS and the CO-CDS methods
Conventional seismic imaging possesses problem in exposing structural detail in complex geological media. Nevertheless, some recently introduced methods reduce this ambiguity to some extent, by using data based imaging operator or emancipation from the macro-velocity model. The zero offset common reflection surface (ZO-CRS) stack method is a velocity independent imaging technique which is frequ...
متن کاملCircumferential spicule growth by pericellular silica deposition in the hexactinellid sponge Monorhaphis chuni.
The giant basal spicule of the hexactinellid sponge Monorhaphis chuni represents the longest natural siliceous structure on Earth. This spicule is composed of concentrically arranged lamellae that are approximately 10 μm thick. In the present study, we investigated the formation of outer lamellae on a cellular level using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. It is shown that the formation ...
متن کاملColour duplex sonography of temporal arteries before decision for biopsy: a prospective study in 55 patients with suspected giant cell arteritis
Although a temporal artery biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), there is considerable evidence that characteristic signs demonstrated by colour duplex sonography (CDS) of the temporal arteries may be of diagnostic importance. We aimed to test the hypothesis that CDS can replace biopsy in the algorithm for the approach to diagnose GCA. Bilateral CDS was pe...
متن کاملWhat Goes Up Doesn’t Necessarily Come Down! - Connecting the Dynamics of the Chromosphere and Transition Region with TRACE, Hinode and SUMER
We explore joint observations of the South-East limb made by Hinode, TRACE and SOHO/SUMER on April 12, 2008 as part of the Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) Quiet Sun Characterization targeted observing program. During the sequence a large, 10Mm long, macro-spicule was sent upward and crossed the line-of-sight of the SUMER slit, an event that affords us an opportunity to study the coupling of co...
